Thresholds vary, but many states use:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>200 transactions, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$100,000+ in sales<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Nexus can be triggered at <strong><em>any<\/em><\/strong> point during the year \u2014 not just at year-end \u2014 so it\u2019s something to watch continuously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Physical Presence Isn\u2019t Required<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you don&#8217;t have employees, o\ufb03ces, or storefronts in another state, you may still owe sales tax there. If your online sales in a state are high enough, you can trigger economic nexus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You must register in that state<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Start collecting sales tax from customers there<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>File and remit taxes based on that state\u2019s rules<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Economic nexus is now the most common way businesses become liable for sales tax in multiple states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Now Is the Time to Audit Your Sales Tax Exposure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every state sets its own rules and thresholds \u2014 which means you need to regularly review where your customers are located and how much you\u2019ve sold in those areas.
