If you\u2019re the only one looking at the scorecard\u2014or worse, if there <em>is<\/em> no scorecard\u2014it\u2019s like coaching a basketball team without a scoreboard. Your team doesn\u2019t know the score, what quarter they\u2019re in, or what plays to run. You can\u2019t win the game that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, let\u2019s fix that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Should Be on Your Scorecard?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The most successful retail businesses don\u2019t just look at top-line sales\u2014they go deeper. Here are the key metrics we recommend tracking weekly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. <strong>Sales<\/strong> (With Layers)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, you need to know your total sales, but go further:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sales by vendor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sales by product type or category<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sales by brand<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discounts and returns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These details show you what\u2019s really driving your revenue\u2014and what\u2019s dragging it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. <strong>Average Order Value (AOV)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>AOV is one of the most important metrics to track because it reveals the health of your sales strategy and team. A dropping AOV could point to pricing problems, merchandising issues, training gaps, or weak marketing. A growing AOV? That means your team is selling smarter, not harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. <strong>Conversion Rate<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>How many people are actually buying once they interact with your store or website? Conversion rate tells you whether you\u2019re truly solving your customers\u2019 problems or just pushing products. It\u2019s a key performance metric for both your sales team (in-store) and your marketing team (online).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. <strong>Traffic<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can\u2019t drive more sales if you don\u2019t know how much traffic you need to reach your goals. Using a retail traffic formula, you can reverse-engineer how many visitors your store needs to hit your sales targets. This is critical for planning and measuring the effectiveness of your marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. <strong>Inventory Health<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Inventory is your biggest investment\u2014don\u2019t let it sit stale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What\u2019s your current inventory on hand?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What percentage is aged 30, 60, or 90+ days?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What do you have on order?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If your inventory is aging and you don\u2019t have fresh product on the way, your future sales will take a hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Make It a Team Effort<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not enough for you, as the owner, to know these numbers. Your team needs visibility too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your sales team should track AOV and conversion rate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your marketing team needs to understand traffic goals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anyone helping you buy needs to know inventory levels and aging.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When your entire team understands the numbers and how their role impacts them, they can take action to improve them. That\u2019s how you create a culture of accountability and growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Thought: Coach Like a Pro<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember that basketball analogy? You wouldn\u2019t send a team into a game without a scoreboard, a playbook, or a strategy. So don\u2019t run your business that way either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Give your team the tools they need. Create your company scorecard. Track the right numbers. Review them weekly.
