But as Britni shared, that disconnect starts with how this generation was raised and educated. Unlike Millennials or Gen X, Gen Z grew up during a time of hyper-connectedness, emotional disruption, and a pandemic that reshaped their education and social development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGen Z has lived through things we couldn\u2019t imagine,\u201d Britni says. \u201cThey missed formative milestones\u2014graduations, proms, social interaction\u2014and their mental health has taken a hit. We can\u2019t treat them the same and expect the same results.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key takeaway? Different doesn\u2019t mean worse. It means as employers and leaders, we need to rethink how we connect with and support this generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rethinking How We Train and Lead<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many business owners feel like they shouldn\u2019t have to repeat themselves, or they expect employees to \u201cjust figure it out.\u201d But for Gen Z, learning is different. Traditional methods\u2014like sitting through lectures or reading training manuals\u2014don\u2019t resonate the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Britni and Ashley introduced the TTRR method used in <em>Retail Bootcamp<\/em>: <strong>Train, Test, Review, Repeat<\/strong>. This ongoing loop of communication, support, and positive reinforcement helps create clarity and builds trust. Gen Z thrives on hands-on, kinesthetic learning. Employers need to focus on bite-sized instructions, clarity, and frequent feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re used to being talked at, not talked with,\u201d Britni notes. \u201cSo building that one-on-one connection matters. Don\u2019t just drop into a meeting with hard feedback. Prep them. Give them a heads-up. Let them feel safe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Empathy Over Authority<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Britni emphasized the importance of approaching Gen Z employees with grace. Whether it&#8217;s personal struggles, mental health, or social anxiety, this generation is carrying a heavier emotional load.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ashley reminded listeners, \u201cYour employee isn\u2019t just a means to an end. They\u2019re a whole person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leadership today requires emotional intelligence. Creating a space of psychological safety doesn\u2019t mean lowering standards\u2014it means helping young employees rise to meet them with the tools and support they actually need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Upskilling for the Future<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to preparing Gen Z for the workforce, Britni believes it\u2019s about tapping into human potential. She encourages employers to shift from frustration to curiosity: What motivates this employee? What are their strengths? How can I help them develop?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She recommends checking out the research of Dr. Jean Twenge, author of <em>Generations<\/em>, as well as the World Economic Forum\u2019s insights on the future of work and upskilling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not maximizing human capacity,\u201d Britni says. \u201cWe have to think bigger\u2014not just hiring for today, but building people who are equipped for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Celebrating Innovation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Britni recently received national recognition at the AI Summit in San Diego as a <strong>K\u201312 AI Innovator<\/strong>, showcasing how school districts in her rural region are using AI to improve education and help teachers focus more on the human side of learning.
